We didn’t publish the traditional way because we wouldn’t have been able do what we felt was right. We know what it’s like when money is so tight that you have to search for all the quarters in your house so you can buy milk for your kids . . . live in Spanish Fork, Utah, and together they have two daughters and a son: Evelyn, Olivia and Kaladin. They love to adventure in the outdoors together as a family.
This isn’t just a children’s book; It’s a story about us.
We have lived through the principles illustrated in this book, tested their merits, and have found them to be true.
In 2017, our family suffered the traumatic and tragic death of a brother and friend. Twelve hours after the funeral, we delivered our baby into the world with no time for meds or a doctor; We were fired then lost all of our money; Our new baby was hospitalized with pneumonia; We started a business then watched it burn; We faced buried psychological pain from childhood trauma. After all of that, what proved to be one of the hardest trials was the anger, mental anguish, and denial born out of an inability to accept that so many things could go wrong in such a short time.
Sometimes we are planted in unbelievably difficult situations. But rather than run from them —rather than dream that they don’t exist —we should face our own personal storms and find a way to grow because of them. When we started this project we were at rock bottom, so we decided to make our message.
Everyone goes through hard times. It is our hope that this principle of growing can help you and your children as much as it has helped us and ours.
It’s not about where you are planted but how you grow. If you are going through something difficult you can’t change the trial, but you can change what you do about it. Life challenges your resolve; it pushes your limits and it tests your strength. With every action there is an equal and opposite reaction: If you are trying to improve it will hurt — That is literally the most natural thing that could happen. But you can take it. If you just keep growing, we promise you will come out on top.
Our message is one we learned at the start of our family’s crazy season of storms. After facing the death of someone’s bright, beautiful light — the sun set. As the sun rose again, we saw the beginning of life while we welcomed our baby girl into the world whose nickname brought this message all the way home for us: “LIV." With life comes pain; with pain comes growth; With growth comes grit; with grit comes results.
